Latchkey Sheila

Sheila is alone tonight at home.
Mom and Dad left long ago.
Today the sitter was late.
Childhood joys faded into the night.

There was a family portrait on the wall.
It showed three happy kids with mom and pop.
Each face seemed to anticipate a better day.

Today is just like any other.
Her hopes were dashed more times
than Sheila will ever know.
