Into the Pit

I fell into the pit suddenly.
The light had left my path.

I need to follow my heart.
I want to climb out.
Everyone comes by to help.

As a ladder drops, I smile.
Each rung is sturdy iron.
I climb to safety again.

Duty calls me now.
Today I am filling the pit.
