Taken Flight

My friend has taken flight.

I had hoped that he would stay.
We smiled at each other yesterday.

I put his letters to me in a box.
I cannot stand to read them again.
I don’t want to weep at their memories.

I want to talk about my feelings.
Yet I do not want to break his trust.
I hope that he will return some day.
I am longing for his forgiveness.
